Mini-post: Shop Class as Soulcraft
Like our post on Motomethod and looking to dig a little deeper? Pick up Shop Class as Soulcraft by Matthew B. Crawford. Crawford explores the modern glorification of the “knowledge worker”, the decline of the manual trades, and the effect this all has on the modern psyche. Like Robert Pirsig in the 1970’s, Crawford uses motorcycle repair as a vehicle for examining broader cultural topics. The result is a must read for gearheads and desk-jockeys alike.
Crawford, who’s also a member of the faculty at the University of Virginia, owns a motorcycle repair shop in Richmond, Virginia specializing in vintage bikes.
